History of Carolina Claymatters
Carolina Claymatters is the Charlotte area clay guild, which originally was started in the 1980’s. It fizzled out after a few years, but in 1994 several potters were talking at Art Fest in Matthews and wondered why there was not a potter’s guild in Charlotte. Lesley Betz Malone and Lambeth Marshall took it upon themselves to form a guild and had the first meeting at Pope’s Gallery in Charlotte in 1994. There were approximately 20 clay artists attending the meeting. After some debate, the group decided to take the same name as the earlier clay guild. Carolina Clay Matters has grown over the years, with a membership now over 100 and has become a group of clay enthusiasts with a broad variety of knowledge and interests in clay. Lib Moss helped create the first Pottery Sale for the guild in the mid 1990’s. Since then, the Guild has developed two pottery sales, which are held the second Saturday in May and the second Saturday in October.
